Nov 12 - Why do we Latinos say such funny things?

OK, guys, This time you are going to be “el profe” and I am going to be your attentive estudiante. Una estudiante latina que quiere aprender un poco más de su lengua. Some of the things which we take for granted and don’t really think about them too much are the “modismos” Idiomatic expressions that we use in the popular language. I'm putting the whole enchilada into English so the beginners can have a little fun too. Rey--stay out of this until some answers come in--I know you can answer every and any one of these.

Here are a few, see if some of you can give a more proper Spanish version of the following.

  1. ya mero

2 Andale

  1. Qué onda?

And why do we say:

4.Pégale (for when you want to tell some “Hit it” referring to a ball—pelota. Now pelota is feminine. What’s with the “le?” Inquiring minds want to know?

  1. “no le hace” instead of “no importa “ or something like it?

  2. “Se me hace” for “me parece?”

How about this one: “Pedro está en su mero mole”

  1. Last one, but I have hundreds of others. An East L.A. greeting. ¡Ese vato!

Sometimes things get a little too serious around here—a little too funerial ( I don’t know if that’s a word or not—Who cares?)

Let’s remember a good surgeon does not begin a serious operation until enough anesthetic is applied. In my view, humor is a great anesthetic when teaching a foreign language.

The first week in my French class is Comedy Central. Let's see what you can do. If you can come up with others

¡Andale!! I forgot one, a doozy, a Mexican preacher friend of mine from Mexico used to say for Vámonos "¡Let'sgómonos! Así es, ¡Let'sgómonos todos! Orale! '
