Note: I previously posted this question in the daily question and answer section of SpanDict, but I wanted to post it again here, specifically in the answer forum related to the translation of IN FRONT OF. That way it will be seen by anyone researching this particular issue.
1) you're in a taxi and, as you are approaching the place where you want the driver to stop, you want to say, "up there, before the next intersection, the house with the palm tree IN FRONT OF it."
2) you are inside your home talking to your landscaper, and you want to say, "please trim the palm tree IN FRONT OF my house." Or "IN MY FRONT yard."
3) You are with your landscaper standing in your front yard, and you point out the yard across the street, and you want to say "please trim my palm tree the way the palm tree IN FRONT OF my neighbor's house is trimmed."
4) You are sitting at a table having a meal and you want your friend to pass you the butter that' s right"in front of him." "Please pass me the butter that's right IN FRONT OF you."
5) you are telling a story about what happened in the store today, and you relate that you were in line and the person right IN FRONT OF you was your cousin.
6) you approach a group of people at a bus stop and you want to ask, "Where is THE FRONT OF this line?"
I could come up with many more examples, but sufficed to say "in front of" has always been confusing to me. I remember once asking for directions and was told something like "está en frente (or enfrente?) del banco." So I was looking for something dire tly in front of the bank, but the speaker apparently was trying to tell me that it was across the street from the bank. Anyway, any help is, of course, appreciated. I'll be sitting IN FRONT OF my computer to see what people have to say.
