Aug 03 - Cancelar vs pagar!
I'm amazed I've actually found a question not already asked and answered somewhere else in this forum! (Though I'll probably be proven wrong in the comments section)
Anyway... I am in Colombia and am hearing cancelar all the time for to pay, which I think they do in Venezuela too. My question is; in these countries what is the best way to say "to cancel"? E.g. we have to cancel the last night of our booking.

De todo modo.. estoy en colombia y siempre oigo cancelar usado en lugar de to pay, lo que pienso hacen los Venezuelenos tambien. Mi pregunta es; en estos paises, que es el meyor manera de decir "cancel"? Por ejemplo. Tenemos que ________ la ultima noche de nuestra reserva.

If I trying to say like "I'm not saying that's a good thing" would I use subjunctive because of the negativity of the sentence
For example: "no estoy deciendo que eso sea una cosa buena" Or is it indicative form?

Aug 03 - Pude, pudía and pudiera
Hi, please could someone advise which form of 'poder' I can use if I want to say this sentence in Spanish? ->>'I could not believe that I could speak Spanish to them'
I used a translator website and it gave me this result: Yo no pudía creer que pudiera hablar español con ellos.
My question: Why was it 'pudía' but not 'pude'? And why was it 'pudiera' for the second part - is this supposed to be a subjuntive sentence?

Aug 02 - Demonstrative Pronoun Gender Matching.
A few days back I asked this question, but it became a little lost amongst other issues, so Heidi suggested I post a more focused question for my benefit and the benefit of others, so here it is:
When a subject noun is included in a sentence, any demonstrative adjective (esa, ese, esta etc.) must match gender with that noun, regardless of what that noun is referring to:
Este libro es prueba.
But what happens when the demonstrative adjective and noun are replaced by a demonstrative pronoun? Does the pronoun take the gender of the noun it is replacing, or the noun it is referring to?
Este [libro] es prueba, or, Esta [libro] es prueba.
Or is the choice of pronoun optional, the former placing emphasis on the replaced noun, the latter placing emphasis on the noun being referred to?
Similarly, would shifting the importance to the noun being referred to determine which pronoun is used?
Esta [libro] es la prueba.

Aug 03 - Habiendo use
Does 'Estoy habiendo un fiesta' mean I am having a party or should teniendo be used instead. I am confused because I think of it as the party is coming into existence as I create it, but I guess it is also a possession as in my party. Just not sure here. Thank you!

Let me be the first to welcome back Lazarus, a true legend of SpanishDict!
Heidita told me via PM that she was going to email him and try to lure him back to participate in some of the grammar discussions we have been having and I was really hoping he would come back.
The name Lazarus reminds me of the man in the Bible who Jesus raised from the dead. 
However, our Lazarus was never dead to us in spite of his lengthy absence. His prior posts are frequently quoted and linked to in order to resolve some grammar debate or enlighten someone about many things.
